DIXY BLOOD’S “LOST” RECORDING

When Dixy Blood recorded the follow-up to their debut album and subsequent EP, they realized they had made a quantum leap from the country infused “Songs Of Love Lust And Loss” and “Baltimore”.
The new record, “Do Hillbilly Sheep Dreem Of Dixy Blood”, while not completely eschewing their country leanings, (the working title, after all, was the tongue-in-cheek “Honky Tonk Hit Parade”), nonetheless indicated new directions as the band introduced divergent musical styles into its’ world by re-embracing their punkrocknroll roots as well as adding junk like LA hair farmer worship, Tex Mex excursions and twisted tongue psychedelia. In essence, almost by accident, they had morphed into something else, especially in light of the emergence of Ms. Betty Loo Gee as a prominently featured vocalist.
Comprised of a myriad of diverse cover interpretations, the record careens wildly in whirling fashion, drawing upon songs and sources the likes of….

Ethel Merman Conway Twitty Warren Smith Jimmy Rodgers/Townes Van Zandt Charlie Feathers Guns ‘n’ Roses Rhythm Rockers Clyde Stacy & the Nightcaps Ernest Tubb Bluegrass Thump Shortnin’ Bread The Memphis Klitz Silver Threads Joan Harris and her Oxtrot Betty Loo vs The Cackle Sisters in an LSD breakdown The Lotras ode to Chikkin Butts Sons of the Pioneers Gov. Jimmie Davis’ Sunshine Lament and Ethel Merman reprise…

Well, you get the picture….

Unfortunately, the record never saw the light of a bargain bin due to a series of extenuating complicated complications such as mixunderstandings, missed connections and, most significantly, singer Clarence “Mick” Cancer’s confusion by virtue of his escalating Nyquil addiction. A pity, because as well as the eclectic, eccentric material there’s also spot-on performances by the band, brilliant contributions from a bevy of guests, and the overall euphoric sense that a real grand time was being had.

That said, Clarence, in all his sagely narcotic wisdom, has deemed to finally, forever and officially get this monkey off his back and unleash the fucker in a medium that’s the only game left in town right now. But such is life.

You might well ask, why now? Well, why not now? We could all use a good old-fashioned belly laff.

Thanx dear, y’all.
God bless.

about

Dixy Blood Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Comprised of Clarence “Mick” Cancer, Rich Lustre, Ms. Betty Loo Gee and Moe Jo (all veterans of local punk rock outfits – Sickidz, Pink Slip Daddy, Bunnydrums, Autistics, etc). The band, whose untamed live presentations have earned compliments such as “hillbilly performance art” and “Gram Parsons meets Iggy Stooge,” view their recordings as an accurate representation of their honky tonk wet dreem. ... more
